THE HISTORY OF THE QUEEN ANNE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING
· 1908- Construction begins.
· 1909- Classes begin with 613 students and 33 teachers.
· 1928- Construction begins on 10 additional classrooms, a boys’ gymnasium, an auditorium and a botany laboratory and greenhouse.
· 1955- Addition of an Industrial Arts Building, a freestanding cafeteria, and a music building. A pipe organ was relocated from Everett to the existing auditorium.
· 1958- An athletic field named for Otto L. Luther took the place of the old Grizzly Inn which closed in 1954.
· 1961- A 2,200 seat gymnasium was constructed on 2nd Ave. It replaced the old Beanery which provided students with penny candy, popsicles, pencils, paper, and hamburgers.
· 1980- Citing dwindling enrollment and rising costs the School Board made the decision to close the school. The students (and the historic pipe organ) were transferred to Franklin High School.
· 1984- The Seattle School District in cooperation with Historic Seattle leased the site to convert it for residential use while preserving its historic character. Classroom space was transformed into 139 apartments. During the renovation, the boiler room was adapted into a party room and the auditorium-gymnasium was demolished to create a circular driveway and entrance.
· 1984- The building was designated a Seattle Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
· 2006- The Queen Anne High School building was converted from apartments to the historic condominium building that you see today.
